Sauk Centre Community Garden wins award
The Sauk Centre Community Garden Club was presented with the Spirit of Caring Award, funded by the CentraCare Health Foundation. The “Spirit of Caring” annual award is a community service prize that recognizes collaborative efforts to improve people’s health through education, intervention or service.
The garden’s organizers, which included representation from the CentraCare Health Foundation – Sauk Centre, Feeling Good Minnesota, University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners, the local newspaper editor, and many community members, will receive a $5,000 gift to be used to expand garden efforts.
“The garden has a strong potential to shape future health improvement and wellness discussions in Sauk Centre, but more importantly, the garden will bring a sense of belonging and connectedness to the community,” said Katie Gruber, Community Wellness Specialist. The Sauk Centre Community Garden was launched this summer and has seen tremendous success. Garden organizers and volunteers planted more than 110 vegetable plants, 15 rows of vegetables (corn, beans carrots, etc.), 17 herbs and dozens of flowers. Garden education was also provided to children and garden enthusiasts. To learn more about the Sauk Centre Community Garden, visit: Facebook.com/saukcentrecommunitygarden.
